How do you build a road Episode 9 Managing Tree planting and habitat

For this episode, Peter Haddock is back with Natasha James, Senior Ecologist at Kier Transportation, to see how the team is shaping the new habitat for wildlife as the road is being built.”

Natalie: “As part of the construction, we had to clear vegetation around the site, but now we’re starting to put it back.

“And where we are at the moment is our tree planting area or woodland belt. Here we are also developing new grassland and shrubs

“What’s important about this phase is that we are doing the planting as early as possible, which gives us the chance to see what’s working, helping us to make timely adjustments, to create the thriving ecosystems we want onsite.”

“One of the things we are doing that relates to this is testing different biodegradable guards across the scheme, tracking what performs best, not just for this site, but to inform future best practices across the industry.
